The Standard hotel is a familiar site in London’s Kings Cross, opposite the train station, but it’s also home to a secret 10th-floor restaurant with incredible views.

Step inside the ‘red pill’ lift, which is a thrill in itself, to make your way up to Decimo, a Spanish-inspired restaurant from Michelin-starred chef Peter Sanchez-Iglesias.

This leads to a colour-drenched delight of a restaurant in deep hues of reds and oranges. Huge cacti and green plants continue Decimo’s Spanish/Mexican theme.

We visit on a Saturday to try out their new brunch menu, a selection of signature dishes that are meant to be shared.

Perusing the menu, we settle in with a cocktail and try one of their Spicy Margaritas. Extra cocktails available on the new brunch menu include The Michelada, made from Estrella beer, Lime Juice, Sugar Syrup and Chilli Bitters (£10.50) and The Batanga, a curious concoction of Tapatio Blanto tequila, Coca-Cola and Lime Juice (£12.50).

You can’t visit Decimo and not tuck into some of their delicious tacos. The Basa Fish Tacos (£8.50 each) on the brunch menu went down a treat. They also have sharing tacos big enough to feed 2-3 people, such as the Half-Grilled Chicken with Annatto Adobo (£45) and Sweet Potato and Black Bean tacos for veggies (£25).

As this is brunch – served from 12.30pm to 2.30pm – it’s only right there are egg dishes to choose from. These come in the form of the Gambas Rojas Tortilla (£24) and the Huevos a la Flamenca (£14), which are again perfect for sharing.

Alongside brunch, you can also order dishes from à la carte menu. We’d recommend ordering the Croquetas de Jamón (£5 each), Pork Belly Tacos (£9 each) and the melt-in-your-mouth Manchego Quesadillas (£5 each).

To end our meal, we ordered a glass of wine which we drank in the bar area as it enjoys incredible views overlooking St Pancras station that are really quite special. Visit at sunset if you can.

Tip: On a sunny day, head to The Rooftop at The Standard on the 11th floor, which has almost 360-degree views.

Best for: Drinks with a view, Saturday brunch, tapas, special occasions
