Not being able to get to the hairdressers, combined with winter drying your hair out, means your locks could probably do with a bit of TLC right now.

So if you’re not using one already, you definitely need to invest in a hair mask to bring your tresses back to life.

We spoke to Sophie Leah, founder of hair mask company, Hola Coco, to find out how to use a hair mask properly, and the long-term benefits it can have on your hair.

What is a hair mask?

A hair mask is a deep nourishing treatment to give your hair a little extra love and help maintain healthy hair from home.

They are perfect for anyone with really damaged or dry hair, but can be used on all hair types.

How do you use a hair mask properly?

Everyone’s hair is different, so it’s about finding the right way to use a hair mask for your particular hair type.

We tell our customers to shampoo hair first and rinse off, before applying our hair mask from root to tip, focusing on the dry ends. Leave it on for 15-20 minutes, then rinse off with warm water and style as usual.

But that’s not the only way you can use it. Lots of our customers actually apply our hair mask to dry hair, then leave on overnight and shampoo off in the morning.

If your hair is severely damaged or dry, it makes sense to leave it on for longer than the suggested time to allow the product to penetrate the hair follicles.

How often should you use a hair mask?

You should use a hair mask once a week as a treat for your hair.

Our hair can get quite dry in winter because of the cold weather, but the sun can dry it out in the summer too, so you should try to use a hair mask all year round.

What are the long term benefits of using a hair mask?

There are so many, but the main ones are stronger hair and better hair growth.

Increased softness and shine, reduced frizz, less flyaways, and hair can appear much fuller as it’s less damaged.

Are there any misconceptions about hair masks?

The main misconception is people thinking it can weigh their hair down and make it look greasy.

Our customers often comment that our hair mask doesn’t leave any residue and gives hair some bounce.

If your hair is very fine or prone to getting greasy, we suggest not applying the mask directly to your roots. Start applying two inches down the hair shaft instead.

How has Hola Coco helped your own hair?

I came up with the idea for the business four years ago when I was taking a very strong medication for acne, which left my hair extremely dry and snapping off. I was devastated and tried everything to fix it.

In the end, I resorted to making my own hair mask from coconut oil and other cupboard ingredients. Incredibly, it worked and my hair started to repair.

I managed to find a supplier to make the hair mask so I could start selling it – and Hola Coco was born.

Since then, I’ve been using it every week and my hair is restored to what it was four years ago, if not better.

Apart from the hair mask, what other products do you sell?

We also sell a bamboo wide tooth comb and a microfiber hair towel, which both have so many benefits for your hair and are designed to go with the hair mask.

Lots of our customers buy all three products to help them on their journey to healthy hair.

We have a section on our website where you can find all our products sold in bundles, which means you save money compared to buying them individually.

You can buy Hola Coco Coconut Oil Hair Mask for £29.99 here
