Leicester Square is known for being a tourist trap, but if you find a hotel door on a Soho side street and go up nine floors, you’ll arrive at one of the capital’s newest rooftop bars.

LSQ Rooftop is an Art Deco style cocktail bar with floor-to-ceiling windows and a wrap-around balcony looking out onto some of the most stunning views of the capital.

Famous landmarks which can be seen from the terrace include the London Eye, The Shard, The Walkie Talkie building, St Paul’s cathedral and Nelson’s Column.

The mixologists at LSQ Rooftop have taken inspiration from the famous views for their signature cocktail list.

The Shard is a Tanqueray Gin cocktail made with basil leaves, cucumber, fresh lemon, syrup de gomme and egg white.

While The Walkie Talkie is Courvoisier Cognac, Chambord, Peychaud’s bitter and Champagne.

We visit on a balmy June evening and are seated on a table for two on the terrace.

One of the first things I notice is how green Leicester Square is. My eyes are immediately drawn to the sea of leafy trees below.

Directly above is the unmistakable outline of the London Eye, which looks magical when the sun starts to set.

We order two of the signature cocktails to start, which arrive at the table beautifully presented.

I opt for The Rooftop, a pink gin cocktail with fresh raspberry puree, sugar syrup and lime juice topped with Prosecco. My friend orders The Tate Modern, a Sipsmith Gin cocktail with creme de cassis, blackberries and fresh lemon.

Next we sample the LSQ Skyline cocktail, a concoction of gooseberry gin, fresh lemon, vanilla syrup, fresh blueberries and Prosecco.

Our favourite cocktail of the night was one from the signature cocktail list – an Espresso Martini. Definitely try one of these if you visit. It was spot on and the perfect way to finish off the evening.

We didn’t order food while we were there, but main courses include Pigeon Breast, Pistachio Crusted Rack of Lamb and Burnt Aubergine with vegan Crème Fraiche.

A selection of smaller tapas plates are also available and include Garlic Prawn Lollipops, Runny Scotch Egg and Piccalilli and Chipolatas and Honey Mustard.

Best for: London views, brunch, catch ups with friends

LSQ Rooftop, at 9th floor Indigo Hotel, 1 Leicester Square, London, is open Monday to Sunday 12pm until late
