There are plenty of afternoon teas to try in London. But if you’re more of a night owl a ‘Twilight tea’ is for you.
Something of a new trend – which in our opinion should stay – The Savoy is the only hotel we’re aware of that is currently offering an afternoon tea ‘after hours’.
Take it from us, it’s one of the most enchanting places to experience this most indulgent of British traditions in the UK.
Twilight Tea at The Savoy review
Served from 7pm to 9pm in the oh-so-pretty Gallery, The Savoy’s Twilight Tea is in partnership with Sussex vineyard, Nyetimber.
Walking into this impressive room is like stepping back in time to the 1920s, so be sure to dress up.
The Art Deco space, complete with stained glass dome, is a beautiful blush colour. Gold accents are everywhere, from the chandeliers and lamps to the bar stools.
Look out for the dancing silhouettes on the walls. They pay homage to a couple in the 1900s who dared to stand up and dance, sparking the ‘dinner dance’ craze that began at The Savoy more than a century ago and still continues today.
Booking for The Savoy’s Twilight Tea is essential. Take a seat in one of the corner booths or marble-topped tables and let the fanciness begin, as the service here is a lesson in world-class hospitality.
Start with either a glass of Nyetimber’s classic cuvee or try one of their fizz cocktails, such as the Berry Royale. A non-alcoholic version is also available.
Guests are then swiftly treated to a refined spread of finger sandwiches. Thhe menu can vary, but when we visited it included truffled egg mayonnaise, coronation chicken, cream cheese and cucumber and salt beef with punchy pickle mustard mayo. Savoury bite highlights are a smoked salmon brioche roll and cheesy parsnip tartlet.
This is followed by two Scoff scones of the day from The Savoy’s dedicated scone shop. How British! In a unique twist, when we visited one was toffee popcorn flavour, while another was a creamy pineapple.
What we loved about this afternoon tea, aside from it being at night, was it featured more savoury than sweet options, so you don’t feel like you’ve overindulged. If you haven’t visited The Savoy before, the service at this five-star establishment is unbeatable.
